PPM is a leading supplier of fibre optic links for the transmission of RF and microwave signals. ViaLite RF over fibre links are designed specifically for L-Band, 70MHz / 140MHz, GPS timing and wideband applications up to 3GHz, as well as covering all the cellular frequency bands from GSM to UMTS. All of the links have been designed for installation and set-up, with the minimum of effort by the user.

DISTRIBUTED ANTENNA SYSTEMS (DAS)

PPM's ViaLite wide-dynamic-range fibre optic links provide a high performance, high reliability, protocol transparent solution for the distribution of RF cellular signals from base stations to remote antenna locations. DAS allows extended coverage into challenging locations, requiring only the antenna and minimal electronics at the antenna site. This type of solution is convenient for in-building signal distribution or where traffic hot spots occur, for example, in city centres.

BTS HOTELING

It is attractive from a cost saving perspective to co-locate BTSs and transmit the RF cellular signals to convenient antenna sites that may be situated up to tens of kilometres away. The costs are saved by reduced land rental and easier site maintenance. If the distances from BTS to antenna are any more than a few tens of metres, the only viable solution is to use fibre optics. PPM has the technology and product range to cover all the cellular frequency bands.

FIBRE OPTIC CONNECTORS FOR TUNNELS AND MINES

PPM has developed fibre optic products for distribution of all radio communications into mines and tunnels. This includes VHF, UHF and all cellular bands, and the fiber optic transceivers are easily integrated with distributed antenna and leaky feeder systems.

HOUSING CONFIGURATIONS FOR VIALITE FIBRE OPTIC LINKS

The ViaLite products are offered in a range of standard housing configurations designed to give the end user a perfect solution regardless of the installation requirements.

PPM will work with cellular infrastructure manufacturers to package the fibre optic transceivers in a way that best suits the application.

ALARM MANAGEMENT

All optical transmitters and optical receivers within the ViaLite range of products produce alarm outputs indicating the condition of the modules. These alarm outputs are brought together in the 19in chassis and, using the ViaLite Alarm Concentrator module, they can be transmitted over fibre to the other end of the link and made available as an RS232 serial data output for use by the user's management and control systems.

SYSTEM REDUNDANCY AND RF SPLITTER MODULES

The 19in, 3U high chassis is available with dual redundant power supplies. These are hot swappable, as are all of the ViaLite transmitter and receiver modules. PPM also offers redundancy switch modules and RF splitter modules allowing the customer to split the RF input signal and route it through two separate fibre links. The switch is then used to select the best link for transmission.

The switch can be controlled either automatically from the ViaLite rack alarm system or by the customer's control and management system. The splitters and switches are mechanically compatible with all the ViaLite housing options.
