Satellite Networks today utilise IP to realise cost reduction, ubiquity and flexibility. Our System Engineer’s role is to determine the most suitable type of network for the application by means of software tools to assist in the identifying the most cost effective network topology and satellite access scheme.
Suitable building block are available for each solution : whether it is an SCPC point-to-point system, a static or dynamic SCPC point-to-multipoint system. The most modern coding and modulation techniques are used to reduce space segment costs.
The CDM570 modem is the basic building block to allow this flexibility. In a point-to-point scenario, the CDM570 can support up to 16QAM modulation with an extensive choice of coding schemes. The IP functionality offers Header & Payload compression, comprehensive quality of service and triple DES encryption. In the static point-to-multipoint scenario the CDD564 quad IP demodulator is used to receive the carriers from the remote terminals.
In the dynamic SCPC scenario the CDM570 modem and the CDD564 are used under control of Vipersat VMS (Vipersat Management System) to offer a service where the quiescient traffic is supported in a TDMA backbone and the traffic can be switched into a SCPC carrier to the main site or to another remote if required.
By looking at the IP over Satellite problem from engineering and commercial viewpoints, the most cost effective and the conforming solution can be implemented in using these tools, hardware and software solutions.
