Taiyo Yuden: Mass Production to Start for Compact High-Value Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors, the Industry’s Highest Capacitance Product

Achieves Capacitance of 4.7ìF, an Industry First for EIA 0402 Case Size
Taiyo Yuden is to start mass production of the multilayer ceramic capacitor AMK105BJ475MV with a high capacitance of 4.7ìF, an industry first for the EIA 0402 case size (1.0 x 0.5 x 0.5mm).
Portable devices such as cell phones and digital still cameras do not just need a compact case size of capacitors. They also require both small case sizes and high capacitance values for decoupling of power lines for high performance ICs. In June 2004, Taiyo Yuden was able to shrink the diameters of dielectric particles to the 0.2ìm level while maintaining performance characteristics, to lead the rest of the industry in commercialization of compact high-value multilayer ceramic capacitors at 10ìF for the EIA 0603 case size and 2.2ìF for the EIA 0402 size. Since then, however, portable devices have become even more compact and high performance, leading to expectations for further compacting and higher capacitance in multilayer ceramic capacitors.
As a result, Taiyo Yuden made more advances in materials and green sheet technology to create multilayer green sheets that are 30% thinner than before, and achieve a high capacitance of 4.7ìF, more than double the previous capacitance for the EIA 0402 case size. Use of this product offers the advantages of (1) obtaining the capacitance with a single 0402 multilayer ceramic capacitor, which was previously obtained only by using two pieces of 2.2ìF 0402 capacitors, (2) downsizing from 0603 size to the more compact 0402 size without compromising the capacitance value, and (3) doubling the capacitance in the same mounting area. These advantages will realize more compact, higher performance equipment through reductions in the number of components mounted, increased mounting density, and a higher capacitance.
Mass production of this product is to begin at the Tamamura Plant (in Tamamura-machi, Sawa-gun, Gunma Prefecture) in December 2006, at a pace of 1 million units per month. The sample price is 15 yen per unit.
In addition to this product, Taiyo Yuden also plans mass production of AMK107BJ226MA, which achieves 22ìF in the EIA 0603 case size (1.6 x 0.8 x 0.8mm), and AMK063BJ474MP, which achieves 0.47ìF in the 0201 size (0.6 x 0.3 x 0.3mm).
