PRIVATE GSM NETWORKS SET TO REDUCE CAMPUS MOBILE CALL COSTS

25th April 2006 – Private Mobile Networks Ltd, the UK provider of private GSM network technology, today announced the availability of private GSM networks for enterprise campuses, utilising the spectrum allocated by Ofcom and due to be granted week commencing 1st May.

The launch of the Private Mobile eXchange (PMX) product, combined with the Spectrum now available from the latest Ofcom spectrum auction, allows companies to build a private GSM campus network to carry GSM traffic between mobile phones used within the campus and from mobile phones across intra-site IP networks, without incurring mobile operator call charges. PMX provides both Voice and SMS coverage with full support for additional high value PBX and least cost routing functions supplied by third party vendors.

"There is a huge need in the enterprise market for a solution that allows businesses to control the cost and feature set of mobile communication," said Dean Parsons, Managing Director of Private Mobile Networks Ltd. "We have developed our products to a fully operational stage and the spectrum award is the green light we needed to deliver our solution to the wider market and meet the huge demand to reduce mobile call cost and connection," added Parsons.

This week's Ofcom allocation has freed up spectrum for non-traditional mobile services, such as Private Mobile eXchange, allowing dramatic reductions in enterprise mobile phone charges as organisations can begin to bring calls under control. The system also allows users to automatically roam between private and public networks using a single GSM handset for both business and personal calls.

"Our experience to date working with a selection of enterprise beta sites is that 25% of mobile spend is attributed to calls made in the office when a fixed line call could be used. These statistics make it very easy to cost justify the investment in a private mobile network and reduce escalation of mobile phone bills," added Parsons.

The market extends beyond the immediate one of reducing call costs for on-campus mobile phone usage - many enterprises have mobile users that are home or remote location workers and PMN also provides a solution for those who do not have sufficient signal for mobile use.

"Our solution can also extend to homes of key employees or remote locations, such oil rigs or construction sites, that are not based purely on a cost calculation like the campus solutions," explained Parsons. "This is the first solution of its kind that solves the problem of poor or non-existent coverage and creates greater efficiency and better working conditions for these situations," he added.

"The award of this spectrum creates important opportunities for innovative suppliers to provide campus mobility solutions based on tried and tested mobile technology. The world and his dog have been struggling to provide campus mobility based on voice over WiFi and fixed mobile convergence solutions, but a more straightforward solution might have been right under our noses all along," comments Jeremy Green, Principal Analyst, Enterprise Mobility, Ovum.
