Cost Justifying Fixed Mobile Convergence - Density, Calling Profiles and Application Needs

Tuesday, December 16, 2008 by Private Mobile Networks

Population density will have an impact on the radio planning and efficiency of the FMC solution. Ideally, we would expect 20 – 40 ‘mobile’ users per cell where the cell has a 100 – 500 meter radius. In additional to regular users, ‘Visitor’ numbers should be taken into account when planning the population density.

The calling profile of the individuals will change the costs used in justifying the FMC solution. The information needed to establish the costs being experienced and to highlight the areas where cost savings can be made are:

  • Mainly on-net (fixed), mainly off-net (fixed)
  • Mainly on-net (mobile), mainly off-net (mobile)
  • High volume of international traffic

Finally, the application and data requirements of the individual will have an impact on the FMC requirement. What applications does the job role require? What are the bandwidth requirements to use these applications? Can additional functionality increase operational efficiency?
