The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) is the UK's first major new railway for more than a century - a high speed line running for 109km (68 miles) between St Pancras and the Channel Tunnel. The project was authorised by Parliament with the passage of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link Act 1996. Once completed in 2007, a non-stop journey from London will take 2hs and 15mins to Paris and just 2hs to Brussels.
Avitec was chosen by Thales - turnkey provider of the radio system - as supplier of radio repeater equipment for coverage in the three tunnels that are part of the high speed line. A total of 20km of track are to be covered using Avitec's radio coverage solutions. Around 80 fiber fed repeaters for four systems (TETRA for the Metropolitan Police, GSM-R, Cab Secure Radio and the London Fire Brigade) were delivered this spring of 2005 and these are to be installed and commissioned in autumn 2005. The whole project will be inaugurated in January 2007 by Her Majesty the Queen!
