Avitec's Unique Repeater Solution Creates Seamless Coverage OnBoard High Speed Trains

In 2005, Avitec won the contract to provide and install OnBoard Repeaters for mobile coverage in all of Sweden's high speed trains (X2000). The order was signed by the Swedish Railway Authorities in collaboration with SJ, TeliaSonera, 3, Tele 2 and Vodafone.
Avitec has now completed the delivery and installation of this unique solution in over 200 wagons, thereby achieving coverage for GSM 900, GSM1800 and 3G (UMTS) operators as well as for the Railway Authorities (GSM-R). The OnBoard Repeater offers coverage in the passenger areas of the wagons by amplifying signals picked up from outside the train for continuous and seamless communication on board the train.

Due to the train's construction (steel and sheet metal) it is difficult for the mobile signals to reach the mobiles inside the trains' wagons. Furthermore, mobile operators haven't yet deployed a complete network outside along the rail track. By installing the OnBoard Repeater developed by Avitec, coverage is cost-effectively improved. Avitec's expertise within site solution aspects constituted a significant part of the realization of the project.
The project was initiated as all involved parties recognized the advantages with a multi-user solution: The train operator (SJ) saw the opportunity to improve their services to their customers and thereby better compete with the airline industry. Additionally, by enhancing the mobile coverage, the staff will much easier receive notice of possible disturbances in the traffic resulting in improved information for the passengers. The mobile operators (GSM and 3G) can through this solution easily increase their revenue by offering additional coverage in locations where their customers appreciate access to mobile services.
