Avitec's High Power Frequency Shifting Repeater was used when an operator in Namibia set up the world's longest GSM repeater link. This type of repeater is used by operators worldwide in achieving cost-effective rural coverage. More information about these types of repeaters (CSHP902 & CSFT1802) can be found on Avitec's website.

Namibia's MTC says that it has broken its own world record for setting up the worlds longest GSM repeater link. MTC installed a new repeater at Solitaire, which enabled customers to make and receive calls in that remote part of Namibia from last month. At 64.2 kilometres this installation is the longest repeater link of its kind - making it a new world record.A repeater takes the GSM radio signal from the nearest base station and boosts it to enable better reception in a particular area. In the case of the repeater at Solitaire, it has 2 units - one at Solitaire where the signal boosting takes place and the other at the closest base station from where the radio link is broadcast. Using this configuration, MTC has been able to produce a higher output power, allowing for a wider area of coverage. This new configuration was engineered by MTC's Radio Network Engineers. The previous world record of 49km was also set by MTC.Solitaire is a small village situated in the South-West of Namibia.
