GSI Globecomm Systems - Mobile Communication Mesh-Networks

Globecomm integrates satellite into your network applications in order to provide reliable, high-quality connection to the edge of the network, broadcast one-to-many, and support bandwidth-hungry applications.

We are the only company in the industry that can design, install, integrate, support, manage and operate your systems and networks under one roof. We can also provide turnkey services that offer the same features and functions as a customer-owned facility.

Satellite mobile mesh-network applications

Using Globecomm's award-winning, demand-assigned satellite mobile mesh-network technology, SatCell creates exciting opportunities to generate new revenues by:

  • Launching a new network or extending an existing one in low-density markets quickly and inexpensively, deferring the capital cost of carrier-class switches and fiber backhaul until traffic volume justifies them
  • Connecting isolated 'telecom islands' into a regional or national network even when the construction of fiber trunks is too expensive or too difficult
  • Quickly expanding coverage at the site of special events that attract thousands or millions of attendees, or providing replacement coverage in the wake of a natural disaster, without building permanent infrastructure
  • Supplementing an existing network's coverage to make new services or expanded roaming capabilities possible, as well as offering business continuity protection

SatCell managed mobile networks

Mobile carriers can choose from three SatCell managed network solutions, each combining high-quality systems and high-reliability services backed by Globecomm's network-management expertise.

SatCell EXT extends an existing mobile network into new markets at a fraction of the cost of terrestrial infrastructure by providing a base-station controller extension via satellite.

SatCell HST combines hosted switching and satellite-linked base stations to enable new networks to start earning revenue now, while deferring investment in carrier-class switches and fiber backhaul until later.

SatCell OVL provides a satellite-based overlay to an existing network that overcomes barriers to service expansion and the introduction of new features, while extending business continuity protection across the network.

SatCell mobile mesh-network technology

At the heart of SatCell is Globecomm's award-winning, demand-assigned mesh-network technology, which optimizes mobile signaling and backhaul traffic for transmission as IP via satellite.

The SatCell technology uses a hybrid architecture customized to the network's traffic volumes and patterns in order to prioritize traffic, dynamically share bandwidth among base stations and deploy higher-order modulation where needed. The result is a dramatic reduction in the bandwidth required to connect base stations.

Mobile networks for untapped markets

SatCell provides carriers with the optimum mobile network for serving low-density markets, geographically-isolated areas and sudden, limited-duration demand. The ideal way to jumpstart growth in an untapped market, SatCell can also be deployed cost-effectively as an overlay to enable new services and provide business continuity protection on existing networks.

Reduction in bandwidth needs

The cost of bandwidth is the single biggest factor in the recurring cost of carrying voice traffic by satellite. SatCell technology can achieve as much as a 48 times reduction in the bandwidth needs for mobile backhaul. With satellite bandwidth costing $3,000/MHz/month, that means SatCell technology can carry a single erlang of traffic for less than $50/month.

Initially, each additional erlang adds $50 to the monthly cost, but as volume rises, Globecomm experts refine the network architecture to typically drive costs down to less than $25 per additional erlang of traffic. As volume increases further, carriers can easily calculate the point at which growing revenues justify converting the cell to fiber backhaul or making other capital investments that will further reduce operating costs.

Integration with base stations

Though based on Globecomm's IP technology, SatCell integrates smoothly with base-station transceivers, base station controllers, switches, OSS and BSS from all major vendors. Globecomm has decades of experience in the design, engineering and integration of systems from the world's leading providers, and is a preferred vendor to many of the best-known names in the business.
