VoIP Testing with QVoice Systems

Times have changed and existing VoIP (Voice over IP, also known as Internet telephony) technology has led several communications companies to offer VoIP handsets that connect calls via WiFi hotspots or a broadband wireless router (WLAN), often with call quality indistinguishable from cellular.

Internet calls mean low rates and no roaming charges anywhere on the planet so there is lots of subscriber appeal.Some mobile operators are responding by migrating their networks towards IMS [IP Multimedia Subsystem] and offering VoIP over their 3/3.5G based networks.

With the latest high-speed technologies implemented in these advanced networks, latency and jitter from packet switched networks are acceptable for good VoIP communications.

In general VoIP speech quality is very good to excellent for stationary use; in real mobile conditions, however, such as during driving a car, the quality level is approaching, but not yet always acceptable.To help operators asses VoIP service quality, the QVoice Team has developed a new test tool for monitoring the QoS of speech calls setup with SIP-clients.

Speech quality MOS of the intrusive test is measured online with PESQ (ITU-T P.862) and the IP-layer is captured and logged. Detailed analysis of the IP signalling can be done with standard tools like Wireshark.
