Magellan DC power equipment to power triple play applications of voice, video and data

Cherokee International, a leading manufacturer of power supplies, today announced the company has signed a frame contract with the Dutch telecom operator KPN. Under this agreement, Cherokee International will supply its Magellan energy and site management solution to be integrated into the street cabinets of KPNs all-IP broadband networks.

The energy solution will ensure very high availability for KPNs Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAM), the devices that interconnect the copper wire DSL connections of many customers to a high-speed fiber network. This DSLAM equipment is located in outdoor cabinets or in building locations and is used to feed voice, video and data services to telecom subscribers. KPN will benefit from the compact design, high reliability and high efficiency of Cherokee International's Magellan product range as an energy source for their remote access nodes.

The Compas management platform, integrated in Magellan, will provide KPN a powerful tool to remotely manage the installed base of outdoor cabinets — supervising environmental and operational parameters and providing security and access control. The platform is fully open and very easy to integrate into any Telecommunications Management Network (TMN). It will allow KPN to reduce response times and increase KPNs operational efficiencies.

In the Netherlands, KPN remains on the leading edge by being the first to install active broadband equipment close to the customer throughout the country. This will allow KPN to offer a range of innovative and technologically advanced services such as music and video on-demand, interactive games, as well as HDTV channels. The contribution of Cherokee International's Magellan and Compas solutions is critical to achieving this goal because power reliability and site security are key aspects of ensuring the required quality of service to customers. The efficiency and flexibility of the Cherokee International equipment will allow KPN to offer the best available services to customers while ensuring minimum impact upon the environment.

"We believe we are the European leader in powering and managing fixed access network infrastructure, and we are glad to support a leading company such as KPN with the expansion of all-IP broadband services throughout the Netherlands. This contract is a significant milestone in our relationship with KPN and will provide cutting-edge powering technology and exceptional management services," said Eric Brouwers, general manager for Cherokee Europe. "By integrating Cherokee International's flexible and user friendly Magellan solution into their network, KPN will benefit from the best of energy conversion and network management. The Compas management platform is a cornerstone in Cherokee's offering. Its embedded patent-pending software should prove to be a valuable tool for Telco operators worldwide."
